How can TaxCloud assist with Filing?

Sales tax compliance includes filing and remitting sales tax liability, however, keeping up with the ever-changing state laws can be challenging. TaxCloud can assist with filing compliance regardless of your product or your location. Read on more to find out how.

Are you prepared?

Before TaxCloud can file your sales tax returns on your behalf, ensure you have everything checked on the list below:

  1. Are you registered to collect sales tax?
  2. Have you enabled filings in TaxCloud?
  3. If you have questions about any of the above, please reach out to the Support team.

How does Filing work?

As a CSP (Certified Service Provider), TaxCloud can assist with filing in both Streamlined Full Member States and non-member states, also known as SST and non-member SST states.

Filing in SST states

  • When you're registered for an SST account, one SSTID is issued for all SST states (reach out TaxCloud to be registered for an SST account)
  • TaxCloud will file your returns monthly, electronically.
  • TaxCloud will pull your tax funding and remit that funding to all SST states in which sales tax liability is owed for that month.

If you subscribe to a Premium plan, filings are free* & orders in those eligible states do not count towards your plan's order allotment. (*In eligible states)

Filing in non-member SST states

  • The process of filing in non-member states differs from SST states.
    • Our Direct Filing team goes into your non-member SST state accounts to submit your returns.
    • Once the return is submitted, the state in question will debit your payment method on record.
SST states are in orange & non-SST in gray

What is a CSP?

  • A CSP is an agent certified under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement to perform all the seller's sales and use tax functions, other than the seller's obligation to remit tax on its own purchases. A CSP is designed to allow a business to outsource most of its sales tax administration responsibilities, and is regularly audited for accuracy of tax rates & compliance.

What are the requirements for filing?

SST States

  • If you would like us to file in an SST state, please reach out to the TaxCloud Support team to submit your request.
    • If you have crossed the economic nexus threshold in an SST state, please reach out to the TaxCloud Support team to submit your request.

Non-member SST states

  • If you would like us to file on your behalf in a non-SST state, you would first need to enable sales tax collection. We show you how here.
    • Once you have enabled filing, you will need to reach out to Customer Support to submit your request for us to file on your behalf.
    • Read this article for the information that needs to be shared with the Support team.

Can I change my filing frequency?

SST states

  • TaxCloud files all returns for SST states monthly. That can not be changed at this time,

Non-member SST states

  • When a sales tax permit is approved in a non-member SST state, the state will assign you a filing frequency. Depending on your sales volume, the state can assign you a different frequency.

If you receive a notice from the state about a frequency change, be sure to share that notice with the TaxCloud Support team to ensure your returns are submitted on time.

Do I have to use your filing service?

No, you do not. You can use TaxCloud reporting to file returns on your end.

  • TaxCloud generates reports twice each month.
    • The first occurs on the 3rd of each month
    • The second occurs around the 12th of each month

What should I do if I receive a notice about a return you filed?

  • Please send any notices you receive to Customer Support to review and resolve.

Can TaxCloud file overdue returns?

  • Yes! However, TaxClould accesses each request on a case-by-case basis.
