When would I need to register and obtain a sales tax license?

Once you establish nexus within a state, you are expected by the state(s) to begin collecting sales tax. You must register for a sales tax license as it is considered unlawful to collect taxes without one.

There are two methods to register and obtain your sales tax license:

  1. The first method entails obtaining the license on your own.

    1. First, you’ll need to collect basic information for your business, such as its EIN Number, type of ownership, the date the business was founded, legal name, etc.
    2. Use this link to look up your business’ North American Industry Classification System number. Most states ask for this number as part of their application process.
    3. Once you have your paperwork, ask your accountant or tax attorney for a list of states where you must register to file and remit sales tax.
    4. Go to each state’s Department of Revenue website and select the section for “Sales and Use Tax.” The state’s website will walk you through the registration process.

The second method is paying TaxCloud to register and obtain the sales tax licenses on your behalf

    5. The fee is $249 per state. This will be added to your next billing cycle. (Note: some states have a registration fee, that will be charged directly from the state and are not part of the $249 TaxCloud fee)
    6. You will need to make a copy of and complete this file.
      1. To make a copy, click on File - > Make a Copy
      2. Please rename the file: "[YourCompanyName] NonSST Registration Request"
      3. There is a video below explaining how to fill out the form.
    7. Once completed, please send to our support team at Service@TaxCloud.net, (or to your onboarding specialist) being sure to include your Merchant ID, the requested state(s), and the attached complete file. We will then respond to confirm reception.
    8. Depending on the state(s), this process can take anywhere between 7-21 business days.

Please note that states may charge a processing fee, so be sure to have a credit card handy if you intend on obtaining the sales tax license(s) on your own.
