Uploading Transactions via CSV
The Upload Center is TaxCloud's built-in tool for importing transactions via CSV. From here you can bulk upload new transaction or adjustment files, associate them with specific store connections, monitor processing in real time, review past uploads, and download reports including error reports for any rows that failed to import.
It serves as a central hub for importing bulk tax data, ensuring all store transactions are correctly logged and processed. Using the Upload Center to map offline spreadsheet data ensures transaction records from any external point-of-sale system are seamlessly combined with real-time API sales, guaranteeing unified and accurate state tax filing metrics.
:::info Before you start: Make sure your file is prepared correctly. See TaxCloud CSV Required Fields and Column Descriptions for field definitions, and review the Before You Upload checklist in the historical and marketplace guide for transaction limits, deadlines, and column rules.

Download the Template
Download the transaction upload template before filling out your data here:
You can also download the template from the Upload Center page after selecting the appropriate connection. Click the Download Excel Template button by the bottom left corner.
Steps
Step 1: Complete the template
Download the template and fill it out using your transaction details. Do not delete columns or modify column titles, see column rules if you need a reminder on why this matters.
Step 2: Navigate to the uploader
There are two ways to reach the uploader:
-
Go to Upload Center in the left-hand navigation and select Upload Transactions, or
-
Go to the Transactions page and select Upload > Upload CSV
Step 3: Select your connection
Choose the connection you'd like to upload your transactions to and select Next.
:::info Setting up a connection
You need to have an active integration with TaxCloud before you can use this feature. TaxCloud supports multiple integrations, however if you need to backfill past transactions from an integration that TaxCloud currently doesn’t support directly, you need to create a custom integration first. Please see this guide to learn how to create a custom integration with TaxCloud.
Also, please note that you should only upload to a live connection, not a test integration. If you haven't set your connection live, see how to make an integration live .
:::
Step 4: Upload your file
Click the What data do you want to upload? area and select your file, or drag and drop it into the upload zone.
Step 5: Map Columns (If Necessary)
If your file's column headers do not exactly match the template's required headers, you will be automatically taken to the "Map Columns" screen. Here, you will match your columns to the system's columns.
Step 6: Review and fix errors
Review your data on the next screen and make any necessary adjustments before proceeding. The system identifies several types of errors, such as empty required cells, duplicated data, or incorrectly formatted values. Errors are listed on the right-hand panel. You can fix them individually or use bulk actions to correct entire columns at once.
Step 7: Import
Select Import. You'll be automatically redirected to the Upload Center.
Step 8: Monitor processing
Watch your transactions process in real time. The Status column will show a spinner and the processed row count will increment as TaxCloud works through your file.
Step 9: Review results
Click the three-dot menu on any upload to:
- View Uploaded Transactions — see the transactions on the Transactions page, automatically filtered by the unique Batch Upload ID. You can click individual Order IDs to inspect specific items, jurisdictions, tax rates, and tax adjustments generated by the bulk upload
- Download Full CSV — download a complete report of the upload
- Download Rows Containing Errors — available when errors are present
If some rows failed, click the warning icon to review the failed line items. Correct the issues in your file and re-upload.
Using the Upload Center
The Upload Center keeps a full history of all transaction files you've uploaded, including upload date, status, and number of items processed. To download a report for any upload, click its three-dot menu:
- if the status is Success, select Download Full CSV
- if the status is Processing Error, select Download Rows Containing Errors to isolate issues, or Download Full CSV for the complete file allowing you to fix them offline and re-upload the corrected file.
:::info A new upload won't appear in the Upload Center list until it has finished processing — it isn't added the moment you select Import. If you don't see it right away, wait a moment and refresh.

Troubleshooting: CSV File Won’t Upload
If your file isn't uploading, check the following:
- File name is over 50 characters — shorten the file name and try again
- Blank columns or rows in the file — remove any empty rows or columns before uploading
- Required fields missing or incorrectly formatted — review the CSV Required Fields and Column Descriptions to confirm all required columns are present and correctly formatted
- Uploading to a test integration — make sure you're uploading to a live connection, not a test one
- Invalid date — the error
unknown date formatmeans a date value in your file doesn't exist. Correct the date and re-upload - Extra columns in the file — remove any columns that aren't in the template (a common one is an added
Subtotalcolumn). Extra columns prevent the uploader from identifying specific problems: instead of flagging the exact row and reason, it marks rows as unknown errors, so real address and cart-item issues can be missed.
If you've checked all of the above and the file still won't upload, contact TaxCloud Support.
Row-Level Error Reference
The uploader validates several conditions automatically. Common causes of row-level errors include:
- Duplicate
CartItemIndexvalues within the sameOrderID - Returns using a negative price instead of a negative quantity — use a negative
CartItemQtyreferencing the originalOrderIDandCartItemIndex - Returns not placed at the bottom of the file or in a separate file
- Empty
CartItemTIC— leaving this blank applies the default TIC set on the integration Invalid boolean string— theExcludeFromFilingcolumn is blank or contains a value other thanTRUEorFALSE. This column is required. Enter FALSE to include the transaction in filing and reporting, or TRUE to exclude it.
Important Notes
- Failure to upload within TaxCloud's assigned term may result in late data or amendment fees (see Exhibit A of the Terms of Service).
- If you upload the same file twice, TaxCloud's built-in duplicate detection will ignore the repeated transactions.
