# Why do my TaxCloud orders have Fallback rates in BigCommerce?

Fallback rates are the BigCommerce rates that apply to your orders when TaxCloud is not reachable or not used.

## When will the Fallback rates take effect?

The Fallback rates will return sales tax rates if:

1. TaxCloud cannot be reached
2. TaxCloud was unable to validate your customer's address
3. If the shipping origin address in a store's shipping settings has not been set up

## How does BigCommerce apply the Fallback rates?

* BigCommerce will apply a "fallback" flat tax rate of 10% to the order.
* You can disable the fallback tax completely, and the customer will not be able to complete checkout.
  * This is helpful if you prefer to not take the order rather than manually adjust orders or issue refunds for incorrect tax.

## Does TaxCloud provide the Fallback rate in BigCommerce?

No. This is a BigCommerce setting. If an order uses fallback tax, it will be noted in the [order details](https://support.bigcommerce.com/s/article/Orders#order-details).

Go to **Settings** › **Tax** to change your Fallback Tax setting.
