# Marking a Customer Exempt in BigCommerce

## Overview

To ensure an exempt customer is not taxed, add the customer's exemption certificate to TaxCloud and mark the customer exempt in BigCommerce.

## Step 1: Set up the exemption certificate in TaxCloud


1. Add the customer's exemption certificate to TaxCloud. 2. Locate and copy the **Exemption Certificate ID** generated by TaxCloud. You'll need this ID to link the exemption certificate to your BigCommerce exempt customer.

## Step 2: Mark the customer exempt in BigCommerce


1. Navigate to your BigCommerce store.
2. Within the *BigCommerce admin panel,* navigate to the **Customers > View**.
3. Locate the customer(s) you wish to mark as tax-exempt and select **Edit** next to their name.
4. Add Exemption Certificate ID.

   
   1. Within the customer's details, locate the **Tax Exempt Code** field.

   2. Paste the Exemption Certificate ID you copied from TaxCloud into this field.
5. Ensure all other customer details are accurate, then click **Save** to apply the changes.
