# How to Fix QuickBooks Online Line Items Showing No Tax (TIC 99992)

## Summary

If sales tax didn't calculate on a QuickBooks Online invoice — or it calculated on some lines but not others — and you see the code **99992** on the order in TaxCloud, the most common cause is the **Tax** checkbox being cleared on one or more line items in QuickBooks Online. This is often related to line-item tax settings rather than account-wide configurations.

## What's Happening

TaxCloud reads the **Tax** checkbox on each line of your invoice, sales receipt, or other document:

* When a line's **Tax** box is **checked**, TaxCloud uses the product's Taxability Information Code (TIC) alongside the location to calculate the accurate tax rate for that line.
* When a line's **Tax** box is **cleared**, TaxCloud treats the line as non-taxable and assigns it **TIC 99992** — a code that tells TaxCloud to calculate $0.00 in tax for that line.

Because this is decided per line, an invoice can show tax on some items and not others, even for a product you've taxed on other invoices.

> **Note:** **The QuickBooks Online Tax checkbox acts as a master override for line-item taxability, overriding the product's TIC.** As long as the Tax box is unchecked, the line will not be taxed — even if the product has a valid TIC assigned in TaxCloud and the customer's address is valid.

## How to Fix It

1. Open the invoice (or sales receipt) in QuickBooks Online.
2. Find the **Tax** column on the line items.
3. Check the **Tax** box for every item that should be taxed. This allows TaxCloud to read the catalog TIC and calculate the appropriate tax.
4. Save the invoice.
5. Open the TaxCloud for QuickBooks Online browser extension and click **Calculate Tax** to recalculate.

> **Tip:** If the document has already been captured in TaxCloud, you can't recalculate it. Create a new Invoice to add the correct tax, or a Credit Memo to reverse the original. See [How the QuickBooks Online Integration Works](/articles/how-the-quickbooks-online-integration-works-4NFUVntzzv).

## Common Questions (FAQs)

* **The address on the invoice is valid, so why didn't tax calculate?** A cleared Tax checkbox stops tax from calculating on that line regardless of the address. If the Tax box is checked and tax still isn't calculating, the cause is usually the ship-to or ship-from address — see the troubleshooting tips in [Calculating Sales Tax on QuickBooks Online Invoices](/articles/calculating-sales-tax-on-quickbooks-online-invoices-s3vWzLHadG).
* **I assigned the correct TIC to this product. Why is it showing 99992?** The per-line Tax checkbox overrides the product's TIC. If the box is unchecked, the line is treated as non-taxable (TIC 99992) no matter what TIC the product has in your catalog.
* **Is this the same as marking a customer tax exempt?** No. Customer exemption is set at the customer level in QuickBooks Online (the **Tax Exempt** flag) and applies to the whole customer. The Tax checkbox is per line item. The only exemption signal TaxCloud reads from QBO is the customer-level Tax Exempt flag — there is no separate order- or line-level exemption setting.
* **Why did tax calculate on some lines of my invoice but not others?** In QuickBooks Online, the **Tax** checkbox is set on a per-line basis. If tax calculated on certain items but not others, it is highly likely that the **Tax** checkbox was cleared for the non-taxed lines. To resolve this, edit the invoice, verify that the **Tax** checkbox is checked for every taxable line item, and recalculate the tax.
